You’ll read the rent amount and think that’s the real deal, but the hidden costs of renting add up quick in a major city. They start piling up long before you’ve even gotten your boxes unpacked.

Take the math of moving in for example.

They’re gonna want a security deposit – and no its not just one month often they want a full month or more up front and then there’s the broker fee in some places, the admin fee, and an application fee that mostly just exists because some bean counter thought they could make a few extra dollars.

The Stuff On Top Of The Rent That Totally Takes You By Surprise

Utilities is the sneaky one that gets you. They list the rent and you assume it covers everything – heat, water, electricity but the reality is its never just that. Then you add in a power bill, internet, maybe gas, and your tidy little budget doesn’t look so tidy anymore.

Some places will even charge you an “amenity fee” for a gym that you’ll probably only ever use a handful of times in a year, and then there’s renters insurance which is super worth having, but still another monthly expense.

And lets not forget about actually moving, whether you rent a truck or guilt trip your friends into helping you with the promise of free pizza.

None of this stuff even gets mentioned on the apartment listing, thats the way they do it.

The hidden costs of renting are scattered all around, hidden so each one feels like no big deal. But think about it, when you add them all up they can actually be even more than a couple extra months of rent over the course of a year. So budget for the whole picture, not just the sticker price.
